I've never actually read any Piers Anthony... well I started a Xanth one at some point and was driven away screaming from the puns as I recall. To some degree Wicked had the same sort of point of view changing complexity... if the Wicked Witch of the West wasn't necessarily so bad, then what is?

This reminds me of the Piers Anthony book, For Love of Evil, where a pious man is corrupted and sent to Hell where he later takes over. It dealt with the moral complexities of what we consider evil...and was a fun read too.

I'm reading "The Shock Doctrine" right now. It's a great economics/politics book (albeit a left-leaning one). Thought-provoking for sure. I remember being utterly confused when I took economics in business school. It's so confusing b/c there are so many angles to approach it from. One thought re: capitalism: at its core it's about discontentment that causes people to develop solutions for that discontentment which end up causing discontentment...

1. Pay off house.
2. Add a room to my house.
3. reduce my caseload at work to 20 clients per week.
4. Take two months per year off...living in random places like Minneapolis.
5. Get a scooter.
6. Get my wife a huge diamond ring that causes her to strain a ligament in her arm.
7. Spend whatever it takes to repair her strained arm.
8. Sue DeBeers for $1MILLION for pain and suffering to my wife and her arm.

Less is definitely more.
I think the bean to bar concept really improves the chocolate experience and so not emulsifiers are needed.
We should watch this brand, they are going to make big waves in the chocolate market. The Owner is a smart business guy.
A definitely a good buy.

Palin was it the final nail in the coffin for McCain. I'm not sure who would have been better, but he went to the wrong side of the mavericky spectrum. I really think he needed to find someone like the yr2000 McCain. Someone uninterested in pandering to the religious right. Someone who was a true centrist. That's just me. A question: Why can 95% of people not talk about this stuff without getting PISSED?

Oh my gosh, I could have written this post. I keep thinking if I could get a job with some decent health insurance, I could get some Adderall and maybe get on track. But maybe I'm just using my ADD as an excuse to not do the work of writing and attempting to get published.

That's what I found so interesting, that the guy they interview is actually an "expert" in things that would make it seem one COULD get to that level, even if they couldn't keep it up for very long. Of course it also presupposes that there are billionaires out there in the prime of their youth with an inclination to do so... but that's just a small matter.

It's part of the immediate-gratification culture. If our investment are not constantly growing, we panic. If we need to endure a few months or years of an economic reality which is a little bit more difficult, we panic. Well, I try not to. But it's hard.

I'm more frustrated by how my body is aging than by how my brain is... of course I spend more time in my head than I do in the gym so that's probably to be expected. The part I just finished reading in Kluge was all about how the brain maps its memories and how it isn't nearly as efficient as a computer memory, but it works for us because we use "clues" to help us remember things.

"basically the brain doesn’t work as well as we all like to think it does."
Duh I knew that already... don't you FEEL how limited it is when you try to remember something.. to locate something that you lost... to make a decision? I often get frustrated by my brain.

quoth Charles:

<blockquote>Kyle, I think what Chad is saying is that the amendment provides for 'public use' and not 'public benefit', which was what the 1832 judgement seemed to change to. Public benefit being more broad in scope than public use.</blockquote>

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. I can certainly understand Kyle's point, though -- and his reaction.

Once again, vernacular has changed. You would not have likely called someone a "user" in 1832, even in legal jargon. But now there are multiple acceptable "users" - drug users, product users (most commonly tech), etc.

I don't think the court of 1832 could have imagined local government profiting privately from the rape and pillage of already privately held land. If somebody came to tear my house down to put in condos they'd have a second amendment issue on their hands, not a fifth.

I don't know that I'd say he's twisting it (largely based on the previous parts of the conversation), but is certainly taking it in the least generous way. Though implying that a kids MMA class is "encouraging five year olds to beat each other mercilessly" is likewise taking something in the least generous way :P It's a different way of tackling martial arts, and competitions are probably not real pretty to watch, but then again once you get to competitive kids sports in anything contact based from football to MMA it's going to be dangerous and likely not "pretty"... though I'm not convinced danger is always such a bad thing. (we won't even get into the massive long term damage done by competitive gymnastics even)

There's a lot of issues involved between protecting kids from their parents poor choices vs not infringing upon the freedoms of the parents and the kids. Some of that level of processing should be happening at the community voting level. Part of the problem there is making sure that the majority doesn't impose it's morality and choices on the few.

Oh, and I've been petitioning the wife to let me sign Jake up for Judo classes for ages... though he may need MMA just to defend himself from his baby sister.

I think Stossel twisted Correia's meaning with the last quote. It probably wasn't spoken as eloquently as possible, but I could infer another way: parents can vote for the representative that will (not) push legislation they (don't) want.

I think this is a vast oversimplification of a lot of sociological, parenting, community and democratic issues. If grown men want to play Fight Club in their basement that's one thing. I think encouraging five year olds to beat each other mercilessly is repulsive - but I defend the parents' right to do it.

So, when are you signing Jake up for MMA?

I'm with you - starting back at the gym today. As much as I love accountability with the wife on my workouts, I really need a guy to smack me around when I'm not eating right.

Another problem I have is that we have an impossibly small pantry door on a full sized pantry. 30" closet, 18" door. You can never find anything that's not right up front, so we waste a lot of food, and since we never seem to have the right thing at the right time we eat more poorly.

Aubrey rarely cooks (I love to cook, but I love to cook what I love to eat, which means heavy sauces, meat and starches). I know it's an uphill battle from here but it's one I need to wage.

Get rid of that food, man! Donate it if you can, otherwise toss it. Start fresh.

As long as it doesn't get in the way of your site's visitors, or negatively influence the content on the site, there isn't anything really wrong with advertising as a way to make the site profitable.
Admittedly, the first year or two we made the "Top 101 Websites for Writers" from Writer's Digest magazine I had in mind it was doing what I needed, giving a platform to those of us running things to make a career out of writing. Then the reality of my lack of writing discipline and having a novel finished to make USE of that platform hit me and I realized I'd sort of like to make some money from the site itself somehow. Of course not running ads for a long time and never placing them obtrusively didn't help the revenue stream either. Right now I'm working with my buddy (the partner on the project) to re-design things to highlight content more in a way that might lend itself to some advertising revenue if nothing else.

Sometimes, just building interest and letting that bring people to other, largely unrelated means of making money is valuable, too. If people become interested enough in what you're giving away, they may offer you a high-pay job because they Google-stalked you and found your resume, for instance.

That's pretty non-obvious, and is a way that some people turn a profit without even realizing that's what they were doing.

It's kind of hit-or-miss, of course, when you get that far into the "non-obvious".

Hey, it's Chad -- thanks for the link.

I remember you recently linked to something at SOB, too. Off the top of my head, I don't recall what. Perhaps the bit about insomnia.

I seem to have some of the width of knowledge plus depth of interest problem, too. I tend to be excellent at learning principles quickly, and bad at finding time to learn the practical skills to go with the principles except when I find myself in the midst of a project that requires them. Then, of course, it's time for cramming.

I'm working on rectifying that, though. For instance, I should be tackling *The Ruby Way* in the near future, and I plan to complete it cover to cover in a fairly short period of time, during which I hope to be writing more Ruby code more quickly than ever before in my life, followed by a refamiliarization with C via *Practical C Programming* and the K&R book, finally followed by a language-agnostic textbook I've acquired on the cheap called *Simple Program Design* -- all in a manner of just a few months. After that, I'll surely need a break from the dedicated cramming, to practice and let it sink in.

I did something similar in end 2006 and beginning 2007, getting through three Perl books in short order -- which basically just cemented what I already knew, but it was a "cementing" that I needed. The upcoming months-long cramming will be complicated by the fact that I have to keep up my professional writing and security-related reading at the same pace as I have been, however, which is a tighter schedule for these pursuits than I dealt with during my Perl cramming.

It'll be challenging -- but also probably a lot of fun, at least until I get to *Simple Program Design* (the only book on the above list about which I've heard *nothing* with regard to its quality).

I've tried organizing some autodidactic "study group" projects of sorts via the Internet to help me keep up with cramming projects in the past, but the tendency of people to flake out in the middle has served to hinder me more than help. So much for a "best of both worlds" (the "self-taught" and "classroom" worlds) approach.

Best of luck to you in your own pursuit of knowledge. Please share any deep secrets of learnin' you pick up along the way.

Contrast that with your 4-year-old's musical obsession for the day: Colbie Caillat - Bubbly, clocking in at 3:26. (He's made me play/sing it to him a good 10 times already today, so I gave in and looked it up on youtube, so he can just hit "replay" to his sweet little heart's content. You're proud, I'm sure.)

The instructions mention only SD cards, and my DSLR uses the CF cards, but I can't imagine the principle is any different. Microcenter has 1G CF Cards for $10 and I'm assuming I could pick up a cheap enough adapter to give it a shot.

I was liking this for the shutter control - too bad I have a Nikon. From what I read last week this "upgrade" doesn't require a firmware flash so I would try it.

You mean I'm under average at 60m round trip? Unless it's absolutely necessary I don't leave once I'm home from work. I'm sure that will change as the munchkin grows up but SNAP that's a lot of mileage.

Also, factor in that about half of those miles are driven in SUVs and trucks... no wonder you can't see downtown for the smog.

Thanks for the reply Chad. I hadn't read his article yet (I did today from work), I blame the anti-zone geek ADD that led me down a rat-hole of reading the last 20 posts on your blog instead of following any links out to other stories.

Part of the point I didn't make in my original post up there was that my problem with my 7-4 schedule right now is that I have to get up so early that I can't stay up late and code/write/zone. If I can really find a way to transmit that mode of work into another time and place than my old "usual" of midnight to 2 AM in the recliner with my laptop THEN I'll be golden.

Hi, I'm Chad -- the author of the piece you referenced here.

Regarding your statement that "This is one of those articles it’s good for loved ones to read so they have a little better understanding of how we (or at least our minds) work," I think the same can be said of Sterling Camden's article "Six steps to productivity and getting tasks completed" at TechRepublic (in addition to being my friend and a fellow hacker, he's a writing colleague of mine at TR):

 http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/project-management/?p=193

I linked to it from my essay "insomnia and productivity" with the words "geek productivity", but it's of course possible you didn't get around to following the link. If so, I recommend you do so -- when I first read that article, my first thought was that it's exactly the sort of thing that girlfriends/boyfriends and wives/husbands should often get a chance to read, to better understand us and our habits.

Thanks for reading "insomnia and productivity", and for the kind words about it. I hope you'll stick around SOB and read more in the future. Now that I know your weblog exists, I think I'll poke around a bit and see what I find of interest.

Wow, that's amazing--and funny. I see people at the gym doing all kinds of things while they're on the stationary bike or the elliptical. From reading the newspaper to texting on their phone. No laptops so far, but I've thought about it.

Homeschooling has become a popular type of education in the past few years. Parents can educate their child in their own homes, free to set their own study schedule and education curriculum. Thanks for providing the information about cheap home schooling curriculum.
